Back to Gleasons

How do you capture the spirit of a place in a picture without losing “something” in the translation?

Hard to do… Especially in a place like Gleasons, the storied boxing gym in Brooklyn. Walking the gym I tried to find photogaphs that would give a flavor of the place, without being to ‘overdone’ or ‘pat’. Stumbled upon this perspective as I circled the heavybags… Guy in the background skipping rope and an Everlast bag… converted the image to Black & White using Silver Efex Pro (I owe a tip of the hat to my photog friend Brian Struble for this idea). As i go through the images from the gym, I often see that gritty graininess of a high contrast black and white image… just gives you the feel of being there.

Consider these ‘environmental shots‘ when you walk historic areas, rather than try and capture ‘everything’ focus on the details… capture the spirit, it’ll force you to think differently and come up with more interesting shots.
