Wicked Cool!

One of the neat things about having such expansive skies over the water is you literally see thunder cells build from the water up. That’s what happened tonight. The raw power of this cell erupted over the water and grew and grew, right before my eyes and the camera lens. This shot is about half way through the process- the tendril on the left side continued to grow and just become massive as I watched. You could almost feel the intensity and the energy being drawn into it. Truly an amazing spectacle, and as always, witnessed by the D3 and Gitzo tripod.

I tried to capture all the action using one frame- f8 to f11 and playing with the EV, but the highlights just kept blowing out- the range of light across these clouds was awesome… switched to a five frame HDR and in post applied a few filters to sharpen the clouds. Also had to clone out some lounge chairs at the bottom right of the image (oh, and a floating dock for swimmers, just thought it distracted from the overall photo). Had to spend almost 15 minutes cleaning sensor crud- forgot to bring my Visible Dust wet cleaning kit- it’ll be the first thing I do when I get home…

Enjoy the image!
