Tristan Turns 9!

Seems surreal to me that my oldest son turns 9 tomorrow. When I think of it… I sorta wanna peak at my 401K and make sure I’m planning my retirement correctly 🙂 I know, I know, many of my friends have older kids, but this is me… and thinking he’s 9, just blows my mind. Ton of clichés run through my mind, “in the blink of an eye”, “time sure flies” and all that stuff, which happen to LL be true (hence they became clichés).

So to celebrate we had Tristan and about 30 of his friends and family head out to Atlantis, the aquarium in Riverhead, NY. Turned out to be a great party! Informational, and fun, and even got to bake in the sun while watching the sea lion show (it reaallly got hot out there!, but it was well worth it). I took a ton of snaps (as usual) and wanted to post a few that I liked. More to come I am sure. Been pushing myself to start exploring off-camera flash as well as outdoor hi-speed synch flash (shutter about 1/4000 of a second, bright sun, f2.8 or so… Joe McNally stuff!). So a few of these shots are exactly that, me playing around, and learning what works, and what doesn’t (sigh, always seems more of the latter than former!) so I can continue to build out my mental checklist of “how to make cool pictures…”

Enjoy!

Palomino Island, Puerto Rico: July 2011

I call this my “Corona Beer” shot… after those commercials where they have a couple sitting on these gorgeous beaches popping a Corona and just enjoying the view. One of the benefits of staying at El Conquistador is they have their very own little island- just a short 7 minute ferry ride away. Really is  place to just get lost and enjoy the ocean, sky and palm trees… So if you wanna get away, book a ticket… will meet you there with a Corona in hand 🙂

Enjoy!

Meet Lilly!

So after many months of silence, we once again have the sounds of paws on tile and carpet, puppy kisses and a pink belly to rub. For to long Tristan has remarked, “Dad, our house really needs a dog!”

And today, after a lengthy journey to Virginia, Lilly “Zsa-Zsa” Rowland has arrived. She’s a Vizla, and she’s just stolen our hearts. She spent most of the ride nestled between the boys in a blankie, or sitting on Tristan’s lap watching the States we drove through pass on by. When she sits, she has this regal manner about her, and her tennis ball pounce will seriously bring a tear to your eye because you belly laugh so hard. She is such a welcome addition to our home…

These are just a few first shots of her when she entered her new house, she sniffed, checked everything out, gave us a tail wag and then chewed on her bed for awhile. All in a days work for this gurl-dogga 🙂

Yosemite Looming

So this Saturday I take off for Sacramento, CA. Will drive a few hours south to somewhere… I’m not sure where… to sleep the night and then up early to drive to the Yosemite Lodge at the Falls. Will be shooting Monday through Thursday next week as part of the Moose Peterson, DLWS gang.

Excited, anxious, nervous… oh yeah, did I say excited? Never been deep country like this before, where the snow may be taller than me. Been running around buying last-minute items… some shell pants, some boots (Kamik’s didn’t fit, had to send em’ back to Amazon!), ordered a pair of Sorel’s… hope they work. I’m outta time. I think, as usual, I am over-preparing for just about anything. When I went to Moab earlier this year I packed for every thing imaginable, and only ended up using t-shirts and jeans and a pullover.

I guess my thinking is I’d rather be warm than cold. Dry than wet.

Can’t wait to shoot at the Park. Been on my list for years now, and I’m thrilled to think of what Nature might have in store for us. Will be up at sunrise, and shooting again at sunset, I am sure. Hoping that some of the images stick.

Oh yeah, did I tell you I was excited 🙂

Shooting the Moon

Just a quick snap taken will I was in the Outer Banks… another photographer setting up to shoot the moon high in the sky over the dunes. Great colors… great memory, captured forever in this frame.

Have a great weekend!

What’s Behind This Door?

Private Door

This shot reminds me of this blog. Wonder what’s behind it? Wonder where it leads? Wonder what happens if I grab that handle and push… or what the owner of the key might say to me if I did just that.

Not sure about this blog. I post a picture of the day on Facebook, and already feel that’s a bit daunting to keep up. Figure I’ll do a full 365 days, and then call it quits. But thought I’d try my hand at blogging, not sure I have a lot to say , but hopefully over time, this becomes a bit easier.

The image above was taken on vacation in the Bahamas~ Atlantis specifically. Was almost an afterthought, was looking for shots with classic Caribbean colors. Something bold… something with ‘pop.’ Walked by this, stopped, I think it was the cutout sun “design” that first caught my eye, and then the awesome blue of the door. Raised camera, snapped, kept walking.

Took it months ago, and forgot about it until I stumbled on it today. Pulled it up, looked at it, brought it into photoshop and added some actions and filters using:

  • Color Efex Pro: Darken/Lighten Center, Tonal Contrast (use this one a lot but sparingly, too much and you go all HDR on the viewer)
  • Pioneer Woman’s Action: Boost (a free action that REALLY pops color nicely, adjust the opacity a bit as it can almost be too much)

That was about it. Must say, looks great printed BIG (Epson R2400).

Sometimes its really nice to look through old photos, one’s you may have forgotten you took and find a diamond in the rough, like the one above ~ Simple, straightforward, but as it rolled off the printer, I couldn’t stop looking at the vibrant colors and the ‘Private’ sign and  wondering… What was behind that door?

..And I thought to myself, some questions are better left unanswered…
