Thanksgiving Sunrise: 6:41am EDT

Aidan woke me up this morning so I could start the latest Hot Wheels: Battle Force Five episode on the DVR. A bit dark in the house as it was just after six. My plan was to go back to bed but of course the thought of waiting email from work, getting him some orange juice, letting Mocha out and preparing her Thanksgiving Day breakfast all sort of got in the way. And I’m glad they did. Noticed through the window some great light in the sky. Put on my PJ’s and walked out onto the front lawn with the D3.

Another moment when you really appreciate the beauty of the things around you. Simply amazing color… right there in the sky.

I wish everyone a terrific Thanksgiving, so much to be thankful for…

Taken with a Nikon D3, 24-70mm lens at f7.1

I’ve blogged and written about this before… there are truly moments when I just love being a photographer. When the light, the scene and everything around you comes into a “simple” focus. This is such a scene. It’s just the visual representation of the word “peace” in my mind.

Simple sunrise… quiet space around you… crispness in the air… rocks that are millions of years old all around you. I’m privileged at these moments to have the equipment to distill this down to its basic nature. And that’s what it is… Nature, being Nature in all its tremendous glory.

I’ll quit there so I don’t get to preachy 🙂

Enjoy the weekend. I hope you find your own “peace”…

Desert Floor

I love images that take the mundane and make them spectacular. This is an ordinary shot of the desert floor in Utah, big ole’ cactus in the lower left and the sunrise above it. Seems to capture the ‘everyday’ cycle of things…

Shot with a 16mm fisheye lens, thats why the sky has the exaggerated curve to it. Was going to correct that distortion, but I felt it added some dimension to the image and brought focus to the cactus just sittin’ there doin’ its thing. This is actually an HDR composite of 5 frames brought together using Photomatix… trying very hard to make my HDR’s look more ‘natural’ lately… sorta over the overdone thing…

Sunburst at Sunrise

One of my favorite moments is when the sun makes its appearance over the horizon. The beginning of a new day is heralded by those spreading rays of light- golden, and brilliant, albeit only for a few moments before it overpowers everything else and the light turns to mush.

This was taken at Rainbow Vista in the Valley of Fire, thought it would be neat to capture that sunrise from this vantage point, with the desolate desert at my feet. Opened the aperture which allows for those “bursts” and rays of light to really be pronounced, and bracketed 5 frames to process this HDR image in post using Photomatix. I think sunrise and sunsets lend themselves to HDR very nicely, as they capture those details in the shadows- you just have to work it in post to reduce the “HDR-ness” of the image, make it more natural and reflect the scene as it was.

Good morning! Enjoy!
